Ghalia Benali, ‘Carthage’s Aretha Franklin’ as the Belgian Jazz legend “Philip Catherine” calls her.
Whether it’s with Persian, Indian, Arab, Spanish musicians or with the Belgian Jazzcats, it seems like the Tunisian-Belgian artist has never done anything else in her life.
Her music has been noted for its attribution to multiple genres and defining contemporary Arabic music.
In July 2019, Benali will exclusively present her newest project “Hadret Ishq” for the first time at Carthage International Festival; this latest and biggest Contemporary Hadra where Benali unifies the iconic musicians from different parts of the world who she collaborated with during her career path and gather them in an epic performance; from USA, Canada, passing through Belgium & France, to Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria & Iraq, all the way to Senegal in a presence of a harmonial dialogue between their diverse instruments and Benali’s Arabic chanting of a selection from her songs and some of the classical Arabic songs with a new modernized flavor, inviting the young Soprano Baya du Welz replying in Classical Western repertoire. Each adding their own flavor; a glimpse of each one’s culture, weaving a magical fairytale in the language of love.
